Blue cloth boards lettered in red on the spine, with mild shelf wear and light bumping to edges and corners. Binding tight. Pages lightly toned. Otherwise unmarked. The dust jacket presents a pink-and-cream striped panel framed by decorative pink-and-black borders top and bottom, with a black-printed illustration of a china dog after Bernard Brett on the front and an advertisement for other Dent children's titles on the rear. Front flap price-clipped. A few small edge nicks and short closed tears (each under half an inch), with light creasing along the edges and mild shelf wear overall. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover.[From front flap] These two appealing stories, both with an Australian atmosphere and background, are designed for the under-eights. In The China Dog Jennifer Jane, who is feeling sorry for herself, and in bed with measles, is cheered up by a very satisfactory account 'straight from the dog's mouth' of the life story of the china dog on the mantelpiece. Old Creaky is a great, tall gum-tree in the bush who learns to give all who shelter in his branches the benefit of his age and experience.The illustrations are by British painter and printmaker Bernard Brett (b. 1925, Birmingham), a graduate of Brighton College of Art whose work entered the Tate Gallery's collection; he later published A History of Watercolor (1976). His black-and-white drawings here include a striking witch-with-a-black-cat, a koala cradled in eucalyptus, and the gum tree Old Creaky himself sheltering a possum in his hollow branch.Contents: The China Dog (p. 9); Old Creaky (p. 45).
